Madeira Style Wine
Our very best wines are bottled as Platinum. It’s our reminder that the choices we make have to add up to one better than gold. This amber nectar, “M”, is the only Madeira style wine produced in the Okanagan Valley. Made from Pinot Auxerrois from the 2004 vintage, this unique wine was placed in small casks which baked naturally under the hot Okanagan sun for five years. Fortified with alcohol after fermenting to 7% residual sugar this is a delightful after dinner drink. Without these details, our “M” wouldn’t be Platinum. And the results show in every bottle. On that, you have our word.
A Little History
Madeira is a Portuguese island off the coast of Morocco. This style of wine evolved in the mid-16th century when British merchants began adding distilled spirits to the wines to preserve them for long sea voyages. By the early 1800’s, Madeira producers started mimicking the effect of sea travel by baking the wines in hot rooms. Today top-end Madeira is heated in barrels, a process called canteira. Madeira is suited to long-term aging.
