Taylor Whelan is a B.C. native. Born and raised in Campbell River on Vancouver Island, he later migrated to Victoria for an undergraduate degree in Biology. Fisheries science turned out to be less swimming with whales and mores statistics. So Taylor pursued his other passion, winemaking. After completing a post-graduate diploma in Oenology and Viticulture from Brock University in Ontario, Taylor worked in Niagara, Ontario, as well as for world class premium wineries in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, in McLaren Vale, Australia, and in Piper’s River, Tasmania. Taylor’s passion for cool climate grape growing and winemaking brought him to CedarCreek for harvest in 2011, and he was hired permanently as Assistant Winemaker in 2012.
Leandro Nosal joins CedarCreek with an accumulative of ten years of international experience. Leandro completed his degree in Agricultural Engineering, specializing in Viticulture and Enology at Argentina’s Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Mendoza. He also has a European Master of Science in Viticulture and Enology. His winemaking journey began at Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates California, USA, one of the World’s Top 50 Most Admired Wine Brands and continued on to some of the most renowned wine region in the word, including Baja California, Mexico; Mendoza, Argentina; Marlborough, New Zealand and a harvest at Tawse Winery, Ontario where he fell in love with Canada. This eventually brought him back here. Most recently Leandro was working at La Stella Winery Osoyoos, B.C. where he spent two years as the Assistant Winemaker becoming knowledgeable about the many microclimates, soil compositions and growing conditions of the Okanagan Valley. He strongly believes that the excellence of a wine is born in the vineyard and that the Okanagan Valley in all its complex terroirs offers endless possibilities for truly great wines. Leandro is also a steward for the sustainability of the wine industry in the valley, constantly looking for innovative approaches to reduce the environmental impact and improve the quality of the wine production.
Cellar master, Casey Hogan, joined the CedarCreek winemaking team in 2015. With a combined eight years working in the wine industry, Casey’s passion for wine began while working at his local wine shop. Wanting to learn more and further his understanding for wine he enrolled in courses to earn his Sommelier certification. This was followed by a Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) advanced certificate at the Vendage Institute and passing the first two exams for the Court of Master Sommeliers. Casey also completed a degree in Oenology and Viticulture from Brock University with honours and first class standing. Casey has since worked at wineries in Oregon, Australia, Ontario and British Columbia.
The vineyards are carefully managed by Justin Adams, Vineyard Manager, who is entering his 20th growing season with CedarCreek. Justin who resides at CedarCreek works closely with our vineyard manager. Utilizing the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program, CedarCreek has nine viticulture workers from Oaxaca, Mexico working with them for eight months of the year. The Mexican crew has made an impact with their highly efficient and skilled viticulture techniques. CedarCreek farms for flavours at its three unique sites totaling 150 acres, which now represent over 80% of our grapes, enabling us to craft some of the finest wine from the Okanagan Valley.
